Lubumbashi, DR Congo January 2008
We stayed at the Methodist Guest House in Lubumbashi (the border town we flew into) while waiting for the next north-bound passenger train. Lucky us, we arrived in time to attend a city-wide United Methodist choir competition. (yes, I made a digital audio recording of all the choirs) The event was held in part to raise funds for a district-wide project to create a United Methodist recording studio in Lubumbashi. (yes, some Kamina Project funds were contributed)
We also got to drop-in on a leadership development seminar hosted in part by the United Methodist seminary in Mulunguishi (sorry, no pictures of that).
Choir members waiting their turn to perform. (Most choirs make their own uniforms)
Choirs ranged dramatically in musical styles; Congolese congregations also deal with differences
in musical preferences in worship!
I was invited to attend choir rehearsal at the Ziona parish. I loved watching the
neighborhood children who had come to watch the young adults rehearse outside.
Below: Ok, this just amused me: The kids (within listening distance of the
choir's songs)riding goats for fun.
